Matthew grew up in the rural Midwest playing in the fields surrounding his country home. His first attempt at creative writing was in the sixth grade when he and a classmate wrote a satire piece making fun of their band teacher. Though it was never read by anyone (the academic consequences would probably have been unpleasant), the experience stayed with Matthew and in high school he got the opportunity to take an actual creative writing class. Here he finished his first novel and got thoroughly hooked. He attended Emporia State University with the intention of being an English teacher but found the actual teaching curriculum quite boring and went on to graduate with a plain old Bachelor of Arts in English with a creative writing minor.

Matthew has worked a variety of jobs since then but has never stopped writing and hopes that one day he can live off of his creativity.
